Transformative Advocacy - Make Change Happen

What is transformative advocacy? SMC volunteers are champions of change by helping Montpelier meet its goals for a more sustainable and equitable community. See our volunteer roles below and please get in touch with us to get started! Contact the Team for general volunteer inquiries at

Capital Area Neighborhood (CAN) program - support your neighborhood CAN group by:

  • Liaison and communication rep for whole neighborhood or part ('blocks')
  • Plan Events and organize neighborhood people and place
  • Grow Civic Participation and engage with the city and councilors

Shared Mobility - help change the way we travel within our Capital City by:

    MyRide by GMT

  • Ambassador - proactively offer assistance to people who are trying this new service. We will provide you with training so you know the ins and outs of MyRide and can share this knowledge with our community
  • MyRide by GMT Community Advisory Group - join

    Montpelier E-bike Lending Library (MELL)

Sign-up for a MELL shift here - we will provide you with training :-)

Lend - Monday mornings at 9 AM - work in pairs for approximately an hour to orient borrowers when they 'check-out' their e-bike loan. This includes:

  • Check bikes over
  • Give people a quick orientation and try-out
  • Get waiver signed if not already done online
  • Set-up with helmets, locks, optional accessories
  • Return - Saturday mornings 9AM at the Farmer's Market

    Montpelier Farmer's Market Try-outs: 9AM-11AM & 11AM-1PM

Housing - our newest program is looking to add much needed housing to Montpelier ASAP! Make a difference by helping us:

  • Organize a Technical Assistance Board and eventual Housing Coalition
  • Document success stories through research and conducting informational interviews

Activism - SMC is always looking for more voices to share ideas with our Montpelier community through:

  • Letter to the Editor - Times Argus, The Bridge, VT Digger
  • Posts on Front Porch Forum
  • Tabling at Events - Farmers Market, Coop
  • Social media posts & videos

Fundraising - like any non-profit, fundraising is a crucial component. Help SMC raise the necessary funds to do our work by:

  • Writing appeal letters to individuals & businesses
  • Thank you letters
  • Talking with neighbors & community members about the work we do
  • Throwing a house party - host a get together to help spread awareness of SMC's programs & projects
  • Grant writing - join the team to co-author new funding sources :-)
